The story of Jeanneke-Pis
Jeanneke-Pis was designed in 1985 by Denis-Adrien Debouvrie.
As the owner of several restaurants located in the Îlot Sacré (the district in the center of Brussels where Jeanneke-Pis is located), he had the idea of creating this statue with the aim of bringing people back to this little-visited cul-de-sac.
He therefore created this bronze statue, the female equivalent of Manneken Pis, in order to restore gender equality in the capital.
It was not unveiled to the public until two years later, in 1987.
Debouvrie’s gamble paid off, as Impasse de la Fidélité is now filled with tourists, not only thanks to its statue, but also thanks to the various establishments located there, including the famous Delirium Café, renowned for its wide selection of beers.
The legend surrounding Jeanneke-Pis
According to legend, Jeanneke-Pis promises protection and fidelity to couples who throw a coin into the fountain basin.
The amount of money thrown in proves the depth of affection for the loved one. The money collected is donated to various foundations, such as the FNRS and UNICEF.
