The Lovers’ Cross is a monument located on the High Fens plateau, near the Baraque Michel. It stands along an old Fens path known as “La Vêquée” and on the former border between Belgium and Prussia. The monument was inaugurated in 1931 in memory of two young lovers who lost their lives in a snowstorm in 1871.

The story of the lovers
François Reiff from Bastogne and Marie Solheid from Xhoffraix were engaged and lived in the Jalhay region of Belgium. In January 1871, they went to Xhoffraix to collect the documents needed for their wedding, but they got lost in a snowstorm on the High Fens plateau. Their bodies were only found two months later, when the snow melted. Before dying, François had left a note for his fiancée inside her bodice.
