History

The A601 is a short motorway (4.75 km) linking the interchanges between the A3 and A13 motorways.

With no exits or entrances, its sole purpose was to provide a shortcut for motorists coming from Germany and heading towards Hasselt and Antwerp. The section was fully closed on December 28, 2014, for safety reasons due to lack of maintenance. Street lighting was also removed shortly after, and nature gradually took over, turning the road into an informal playground for local children, walkers, and bikers.

In July 2021, the motorway was used as temporary storage for 90,000 tons of waste from the devastating floods in the Vesdre valley.

A rehabilitation project is planned, though the date remains unknown.

Access & Parking

Access is prohibited. Even “abandoned,” the motorway remains state property, as reminded by the many warning signs installed in July 2021.

However, the best place to view the A601 up close is opposite the Milmort football field (Rue de l’Escousset), the only spot at the same height with no visual obstacles and easy parking.
