Charneux Cross

Herve , Liege

Standing fifteen meters tall, the Croix du Bois del Fiesse — also known as the Charneux Cross — offers an exceptional panoramic view over the Pays de Herve. Made entirely of concrete, it was founded and inaugurated in 1913 by the village priest.

What is the Bois del Fiesse?

The “Bois del Fiesse” (meaning “Festival Wood” in Walloon) is the locality where the cross of the same name is located.

The name is linked to the tournaments organized between the 13th and 18th centuries among the lords of Bolland, Xhéneumont, and Charneux, as well as from more distant regions such as Luxembourg, Liège, and Franchimont.

Also worth seeing…

Next to the Charneux Cross stands an observation turret from the Fort of Battice, located a few kilometers away, known as MN29. Its mission was surveillance, intelligence gathering, target adjustment, and fire control. It withstood German assaults from May 10 to May 17, 1940.

The turret is open to visitors, but the interior is completely empty.
