Description

Located on Van Wesenbekestraat, this neighborhood has a rich history of supporting the Chinese community that settled here after World War II. Today, it is known for its pan-Asian atmosphere, with restaurants offering a variety of Asian cuisines such as Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Pakistani, Thai, and Nepalese. There are also pan-Asian organizations and businesses supporting the Chinese, Nepalese, Indonesian, and Filipino communities. The country’s largest Asian supermarket, Sun Wah, offers products from China, Thailand, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and India.

Chinatown is also home to a Buddhist temple and a martial arts school. Although the Chinese presence is still predominant, merchants from Thailand, Nepal, and other Asian countries have settled in the neighborhood, sometimes causing it to be nicknamed Asiatown to reflect its growing diversity.
