Cutlery Museum

Cutlery Museum

Gembloux , Namur

In the past, knives helped establish Gembloux’s reputation; at one time, the town was even known as the “Capital of Cutlery.” You can explore the legacy of this craft at the Cutlery Museum, located at the Maison du Bailli in Epinal Park.

What to see at the Cutlery Museum?

Although there is now only one artisanal cutler left in Gembloux, there was a time when the town was renowned for its many knife makers. The museum traces the history of several local manufacturers, featuring period artifacts and documents.

We recommend the guided tour, led by Pierre Nederlandt—the museum’s curator and author of several books on cutlery—so you can enjoy his many anecdotes and explanations about the exhibits.

Accessibility

The Cutlery Museum is located on the first floor of the Château du Bailli, accessible only via a spiral staircase. It is therefore not accessible to people with limited mobility.

Guided Tours

Guided tours are available upon request, directly through the tourist office, for small groups only (the museum is not very large, and the aisles between the display cases are quite narrow).

The museum is also open free of charge to individual visitors on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
