In 1919, the municipality of Ittre was awarded the title of “geographical center of Belgium.” A few months later, the country expanded with the Treaty of Versailles and the annexation of the municipalities of Eupen, Malmedy, and Saint-Vith. It was not until 76 years later, in 1995, that the French National Geographic Institute recalculated the figure, which was validated the following year by its Belgian counterpart.
