Fort Eben-Emael

Fort Eben-Emael

Eben-Emael , Liege

Fort Eben-Emael is a wartime fortress located near the border with the Netherlands. Built between 1932 and 1935, it was the key stronghold of the northern section of Liège’s fortified belt. Its rapid capture by the Wehrmacht on 10 May 1940 — despite its reputation as “the most powerful fort in Europe” — marked Belgium’s entry into the Second World War.
