Where is the Rocher du Hérou?
The Rocher du Hérou stands in a tight bend of the Ourthe River, a few kilometers downstream from the confluence of the Eastern Ourthe and the Western Ourthe. The river literally crashes into a massive rock barrier, approximately 1,500 meters long and nearly 80 meters high, before winding around it in a spectacular curve.
A raw Ardennes landscape
The Rocher du Hérou is an impressive outcrop of Ardennes phyllites (a rock typical of the region), rising almost vertically above the valley.
The landscape is particularly wild:
- Large wooded slopes
- Dense forests and fir trees
- Rocky escarpments
- Rugged terrain typical of the Ardennes
Here, there are no towns, no noise. Just nature, the wind, and the river below. It is a place that truly offers that sense of isolation unique to Belgium’s most unspoiled corners.
A designated site of exceptional importance
The Rocher du Hérou enjoys significant protected status:
- Designated as a major heritage site of the Walloon Region since 1937
- Listed as an exceptional heritage site of the Walloon Region since 2009
- Included in the Natura 2000 network
The Six Ourthes Lookout
About 100 meters from the edge of the rock lies the Hérou Lookout, also known as the “Six Ourthes Lookout.”
From here, one could once observe the river appearing and disappearing six times in the valley due to its successive meanders—a spectacle quite unique in Belgium.
⚠️ Since 2009, the viewpoint has been closed to the public for safety reasons.
