A historic and emblematic cemetery
Robermont Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Liège, covering more than 40 hectares. It was established on 21 May 1805 by decision of the municipal council on the grounds of the former Robermont Abbey gardens, in order to replace burials within the city center for public health reasons.
Development and funerary role
From the late 18th century onward, burials within the city of Liège were prohibited. Robermont quickly became one of the three cemeteries located outside the city walls, before evolving into the city’s main burial site when the others closed during the first decades of the 19th century.
A site of remembrance of the First World War
The cemetery includes a military section containing the graves of soldiers and prisoners of war of various nationalities (Belgian, French, Italian, Russian, British, and others). This area forms part of the memorial heritage and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside other funerary sites linked to the First World War.
Civilian graves and notable figures from Liège
In addition to its military sections, the cemetery features numerous civilian graves. It is the final resting place of cultural, political, and scientific figures who shaped the history of Liège, as well as funerary monuments often noted for their architecture and symbolic value.

Beyond its funerary function, Robermont Cemetery is also a vast green space with tree-lined avenues, ideal for walking and heritage exploration. Like other major urban cemeteries, it combines history, funerary art, and nature in a unique setting.
