History
This tower was an integral part of the second fortifications of the city of Mons and was located between the Nimy and Havré gates.
Built in 1358 and 1359, the tower successively bore several names: Grosse Tour, Tour à Grès, Tour au Blé, Tour des Ladres, before becoming known as the Valenciennes Tower at the beginning of the 17th century. The remaining sections of the ramparts were permanently demolished in 1818.
In 1825, under the Dutch regime, the tower was used as a powder magazine and lost one of its floors. In 1870, it was incorporated into the cavalry barracks. From 2005 to 2009, the tower underwent a complete restoration.
