This monument, designed by the artist Marcel RAU, stands precisely on the spot where Cavalier Fonck — considered the first Belgian soldier to be killed by the enemy — lost his life. Inaugurated on 25 July 1923, the sculpture consists of a rectangular stone block bearing an inscription, from which emerge the bust of the horseman and the head of his horse. The rider is depicted gazing toward the horizon, in an attitude of vigilance as he awaits the enemy.
