History
After the fall of the Fort d’Ében-Émael, German troops besieged the Fort of Aubin-Neufchâteau, supported by the forts of Battice and Barchon, for 11 days. The defenders withstood 23 infantry assaults and numerous bombardments, but held out until their resources were exhausted.
The fort was finally stormed after its turrets were destroyed and its ammunition depleted. The commander was forced to surrender, but the garrison marched out under arms through a German guard of honor.
In 1942, the fort was used for testing secret German weapons, and in the 1960s, it was decommissioned.
In 1989, the fort was cleaned up and reopened to the public thanks to the help of volunteers. Today, the fort is maintained by volunteers whose mission is to preserve the memory of these brave men.
