A Masterpiece at the Intersection of Military History and Tourism

The Pays de Herve Panoramic Tower offers more than just a beautiful view; it stands as a direct witness to contemporary European history. During the Cold War, Belgium occupied a highly strategic geographical position between France and Germany. It was in this context that NATO chose the site of Fort Battice to erect this impressive 70-meter-tall metal structure, along with a bunker at its base, to serve as a vital military observation and communications post.

Today, this historic symbol has begun a new chapter. Following a lengthy conversion process that began in 2016 and construction work that started in April 2023, the project—with a total cost of 2.77 million euros—now blends history, heritage, and nature. Educational panels are installed along the entire route to provide all the necessary historical explanations for curious visitors.

A breathtaking view from 32 meters above ground

For the most adventurous, climbing the tower’s 170 steps leads directly to a secure observation deck perched 32.5 meters above ground. From there, an exceptional 360° panorama unfolds over the landscapes, the typical hedgerow countryside of the Pays de Herve, and the surrounding landmarks (such as the church in Battice or the military base). An orientation map has also been installed to help visitors easily identify the villages and notable landmarks visible on the horizon.

The most memorable feature: At the base of the structure, you can also discover the Peace Monument, which was unveiled at the same time. It bears a powerful message engraved in stone, conceived by children from a local school: “Together, let’s cultivate peace.” A poignant reminder of the fragility of peace at this site, which was the scene of fierce fighting during World War II in May 1940.
