What is a hornbeam arbour?
A hornbeam arbour is a row of hornbeam trees planted in straight, parallel lines and connected by a vaulted metal structure to create a “green” tunnel.
Some facts and figures
The Haut-Marêt Charmille—sometimes nicknamed “Le Berceau de La Reid”—was built in 1885 by JR Nys, a rentier and owner of the estate. It consists of more than 4,500 hornbeams, with a total length of 573 meters.
This length makes it one of the longest in Europe, despite the fact that it was reduced by half due to the passage of German tanks in May 1940.
It was listed on December 12, 1979, by the Royal Commission for Monuments and Sites, and was restored in 1985.
