The origin of the Zinneke Pis
This 50 cm-high statue was commissioned by the Chartreux district committee to attract tourists while keeping the spirit of *Zwanze* alive — a type of humor rooted in self-mockery and strongly associated with Brussels.
It is a playful nod to the Manneken Pis — Belgium’s most famous statue — and to its female counterpart, Jeanneke Pis.
What is a “Zinneke”?
“Zinneke” is a Brussels term referring to the little Senne, the river running around Brussels, but it also means a stray or mixed-breed dog.
